BENBROOK, TX — A group of Western Hills High School students spent Friday doing more than competing. They showed what effort, focus, and teamwork look like in real time.
Students from the RISE and Deaf Education programs participated in the Special Olympics Track and Field competition and returned home with a strong showing across multiple events.
Several athletes stood out with first-place finishes. Liliana Aranda won the 400-meter walk. Enrique Campos took first in both the 200-meter run and softball toss, recording the farthest throw of the day. Emily Saldana added two more first-place finishes in the 100-meter run and softball toss.
Others added to the medal count with top finishes of their own. Brayden Bossier placed in both the 100-meter run and the standing long jump. Gerardo Carrillo and Valentina Suarez each earned second-place finishes in the 100-meter run. Joseph Santillano competed in the 200-meter run and long jump, while Alan Mejia, Amani Padron, and Michelle Zamora each contributed strong efforts in their respective events.
The day ended with a clear highlight. The 4×100 relay team of Joseph Santillano, Alan Mejia, Enrique Campos, and Gerardo Carrillo pulled away for a first-place finish.
For these students, the results matter. But what stood out just as much was how they competed. They showed up, gave their best, and represented their school well. Around campus, that is something people are still talking about.
