The Western Hills High School Robotics Club is proving that determination and teamwork can outmatch experience.
Under the direction of teacher and mentor Mr. Ruston Pennington, the team has achieved another remarkable milestone, earning 3rd place in the Open Category Driving Competition this year.
What makes the win even more impressive is how they got there. Last year, this group of first-time competitors advanced as a UIL-Medium rookie team for the first time in over a decade. Now, facing seasoned teams with large memberships and robotics built into their curriculum, these students continue to punch above their weight—operating with only a few hours of after-school practice each week and no extra credit or incentives, just pure passion and perseverance.
Team members include Hector Torres, Celestiana Valles, Avery Burns, Isabel Acala, Christian Ross, Ana Cedillo, Coby Turner, Johnathon Duffey, Ta-Shon Smith, Enrique Campos, Joseph Santillano, Michael Paige, and Sarah Tyler.
Up next: the team is preparing for the State Competition at Fair Park Coliseum in Dallas.
