Strength was on full display this week as the Western Hills boys and girls powerlifting teams delivered a dominant performance at their meet in Kennedale.
On the girls’ side, Amali Angeles earned second place with a new personal record squat of 245 pounds and a 275-pound deadlift. Vivian Hernandez also finished second, highlighted by a strong 215-pound squat. Anna Rivas took first place and set new personal records across the board with a 230-pound squat, 115-pound bench press, and 270-pound deadlift.
The boys’ team matched that momentum. Josh Oliver placed second in the 165 weight class with new personal records in both squat and deadlift at 335 pounds each. Josiah Peña captured first place in the 220 weight class and delivered one of the night’s biggest lifts with a 500-pound personal record. Ethan Morgan claimed first in the 275 weight class, and D’shaun Elder secured first in the 242 weight class.
With medals, records, and momentum building, the Cougars now turn their focus to the District meet at Poly on Wednesday, February 11.
Students interested in joining the program can connect with Coach Rock or Coach Caballero or stop by the weight room after school. The bars are set, and the work continues.
