Football is back, and the Western Hills Cougars hit the practice field today with the start of the 2026 season just one week before students return to campus.
Optimism is building around quarterback Tyler Johnston, whose offseason work has added strength to his speed and mobility. Johnston is expected to lead a more balanced offense this fall, with standout wide receiver Gabriel Christion giving the Cougars another explosive playmaker.
Together, they’re part of a talented group hoping to turn last year’s 2-7 overall and 1-5 district record into a much different story.
The Cougars will get an early look at the season ahead with scrimmages against the Atlas Rattlers on Friday, Aug. 14, at Western Hills’ new turf field, followed by the Trimble Tech Bulldogs on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Farrington Field.
The regular season opens later in August when Western Hills hosts the Burkburnett Bulldogs at Handley Field.
Fans can also mark their calendars for Homecoming against the Carter Riverside Eagles on Oct. 23, the annual crosstown matchup with the Benbrook Bobcats on Oct. 30 at Clark Stadium, and Senior Night against the Diamond Hill Jarvis Eagles on Nov. 6 at Handley Stadium.
