Former U.S. Rep. Kay Granger Dies at 83.

North Texas is remembering a trailblazer in public service.

Former U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, who represented Fort Worth and much of Tarrant County in Congress for nearly three decades, has died at the age of 83.

Before serving in Washington, Granger made history as Fort Worth’s first female mayor. She later represented Texas’ 12th Congressional District from 1997 until her retirement in 2025, becoming the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.

Throughout her career, Granger championed transportation improvements, supported projects tied to DFW Airport, and worked with local leaders on initiatives that helped drive economic growth across North Texas.

Despite her national role, she remained closely connected to the communities she served, regularly attending local events and recognizing residents’ accomplishments throughout the district.

Granger retired in early 2025 due to health challenges, ending a public service career that spanned nearly three decades in Congress.

Regardless of political affiliation, many across North Texas recognize Kay Granger’s lasting impact on the region. Her leadership helped shape communities, expand opportunities, and pave the way for future generations of women in public service.
