With postseason baseball around the corner, the Benbrook Bobcats got one more tough test Wednesday night on the road against Mansfield Legacy.
It was the kind of game coaches appreciate this time of year. Tight, physical, and decided by the smallest moments.
Benbrook opened with Chevy Martinez on the mound, and he delivered a strong start, holding the Broncos scoreless in the first while matching Legacy pitch for pitch. The Bobcats broke through in the second when Ethan Tucker turned an 0-2 count into a solo home run to right field, continuing what has been a standout season at the plate.
Legacy answered quickly, tying the game and then taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Benbrook responded again. Brennan Barton’s groundout helped even things up, and the Bobcats stayed within striking distance as both teams leaned on strong pitching through the middle innings.
But in the sixth, the Broncos found the deciding run. An error brought a runner home, giving the Broncos a 3-2 lead they would not give back.
Trentin Hornbeck took the loss in relief, allowing one run, unearned, over one inning. Martinez worked five solid innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out seven.
At the plate, Tucker was the difference-maker for Benbrook, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run and two singles. He and Barton each drove in a run, giving the Bobcats what they needed offensively, just not quite enough to finish.
Now sitting at 19-10-1, Benbrook turns its attention to the bigger picture. The playoffs are next, but first, the Bobcats return home Saturday to host Memorial in another chance to sharpen before the postseason begins.
