Friday night was another challenging chapter in a difficult season for the Western Hills Lady Cougars, who entered the game hoping to snap a three-game skid and earn some payback against the Carter-Riverside Lady Eagles.
Playing on their home court, the Lady Cougars struggled early to handle pressure defense and find a rhythm on offense. Both teams opened slowly, but Carter Riverside began to pull away behind strong play from D’Ani Wilson and Massiny Sullivan. By the end of the first quarter, Western Hills trailed 9-2.
The second quarter proved decisive. Turnovers and missed opportunities piled up, and the Lady Eagles took full advantage on both ends of the floor. By halftime, the deficit had grown to 25-2, putting the game out of reach.
To their credit, the Lady Cougars came out of the break with renewed energy. They outscored Carter Riverside 9-4 in the third quarter and showed flashes of the fight that has kept them competing all season. Still, the hole was too deep to climb out of, and the Lady Eagles closed the night with an 8-4 edge in the final quarter to secure a 37-15 win.
Western Hills now sits at 2-19 on the season and 1-8 in district play, currently sixth in the standings. The Lady Cougars will look for a fresh start Tuesday night when they hit the road to face Dunbar at 7:30 p.m., a familiar opponent that edged them 23 to 18 in their last meeting.
