As a wintry mix pushed through Benbrook and the greater DFW area, the Benbrook Bobcats and the Southwest Raiders met Thursday night in a packed Benbrook Middle High School gym for a district game with first-place implications.
The matchup was moved up from Friday due to weather concerns reshaping schedules across North Texas.
Benbrook entered the night 4-1 in district play, sitting second, while Southwest arrived red hot with an eight-game win streak and a perfect 5-0 district record. The stakes were clear. Control the district race heading into the final stretch.
Recent history favored the Raiders. Southwest edged Benbrook by two last season and followed that with a lopsided win later in the year. This time, the Bobcats were determined to change the script, especially with senior guard Brennan Barton coming off a record-setting 39-point performance earlier in the week.
The opening quarter set the tone with both teams trading baskets. Benbrook got scoring from Barton, Jayden Bradshaw, Deshawn Deane, and Maddox Thompson, but trailed 15-10 after one.
The second quarter proved pivotal. Southwest’s pressure defense disrupted Benbrook’s rhythm and limited Barton’s space.
Despite Barton’s continued scoring, critical Bobcat turnovers crept in as the Raiders went on a key run capped by a highlight baseline dunk from King Taylor.
However, Benbrook stayed within reach behind contributions from Dorien Johnson and Jayden Hall, but went into halftime down 34-20.

The third quarter brought steadier offense. Hall led the way with five points, while Barton and Bradshaw added scores of their own. Each Bobcat push was answered, and the deficit narrowed only slightly to 44-31 heading into the fourth.
What followed was Benbrook’s strongest stretch. Adjustments paid off as the Bobcats found rhythm and scored 15 points in the final quarter. Barton, Hall, Bradshaw, Johnson, and Cael Denson all contributed.
After another emphatic dunk by Taylor, Bradshaw answered with a fast break finish of his own. With under two minutes left, Benbrook cut the lead to eight and had the crowd on its feet.
That was as close as it would get. Late turnovers and disciplined clock control by Southwest closed the door, handing Benbrook a 59-46 loss.
Barton finished with 16 points, Hall added 10, and the Bobcats showed resilience throughout despite shooting just under 35 percent. The loss drops Benbrook to 16-11 overall, 4-2 in district, and still holds second place.
The Bobcats will look to regroup quickly as they face crosstown rival Western Hills Cougars on Tuesday, January 27, at 6 pm, with plenty of district basketball still to be decided.
