As winter winds pick up across Benbrook, fallen leaves are ending up everywhere, including our streets.
While blowing leaves into the road might seem harmless or convenient, it is more than an eyesore. It can be dangerous, and it is against city rules.
According to the City of Benbrook, intentionally raking or blowing leaves, grass clippings, or other yard debris into the street is a municipal code violation. The reason is simple. Yard debris blocks storm drains, worsens flooding, and creates slick conditions that can cause motorcycles and cars to lose traction.
What the ordinance does not cover is what the wind does on its own. Homeowners are not responsible for leaves that naturally blow into the street. That is why street sweepers regularly run through neighborhoods to handle debris moved by the weather. The issue arises when debris is deliberately pushed into the roadway.
Many neighbors recommend mulching leaves back into the lawn or bagging them for proper disposal. Mulching takes a little time, but it puts nutrients back into the soil and keeps streets safer for everyone.
For those who want to read the city guidance directly, the ordinance isย outlined in Item 4 on the City of Benbrook FAQ page.
As winter settles in, a little extra care in yard cleanup helps protect drains, roads, and neighbors. Keeping leaves out of the street is a small step that makes a real difference across the community.
