ENBROOK, TX – Floodplain safety is once again front and center in Benbrook, as residents raise alarms over clogged drains, poor maintenance, and the long-term risks to neighborhoods near the Trinity River.
Local resident Greg Clem recently photographed a clogged lateral line that he calls a “single point of failure” for the area’s drainage system. According to Clem, city engineers have confirmed that even something as small as a trash can lid can block critical drains, potentially triggering severe flooding.
Two larger drains on Brazos Street, each eight feet wide, were also reportedly overtaken during recent heavy rains, while Timberline relies on a much smaller four-foot drain. The combination of high river flow, back pressure from the bridge, and limited canal outlets creates what residents believe is a recipe for disaster.
The debate now shifts to accountability. Is the responsibility for upkeep on the developer Sandlin Homes, a future homeowners association, or the City of Benbrook? Residents argue that whoever is responsible for the task is falling short, leaving the community vulnerable.
Beyond drainage, some are voicing frustration over Benbrook Lake itself. Once a thriving recreational spot, residents claim the lake has been overdrawn by the Tarrant Regional Water District, leaving ramps unusable for years and undermining the city’s identity as a lakeside community. While some boaters still launch from nearby parks, locals insist the lake is far from its former glory.
Community members are uniting under the banner Stop South Benbrook Floods, calling out developers and urging neighbors to stay engaged with city leadership. Their message is clear: residents will not sit quietly while safety, recreation, and neighborhood integrity are at stake.
