A mosquito collected in Tarrant County has tested positive for West Nile virus, prompting the city to spray a portion of the community overnight this week.
The City of Benbrook said crews will begin spraying around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, and finish by 6 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, weather permitting.
The treatment will cover roughly a half-mile around the 1400 block of Vernon Castle Avenue, generally stretching from Mesquite Trail to Rio Grande Drive and Duane Street to Timberline Drive.
The spraying follows confirmation from Tarrant County Public Health that a mosquito collected from a local testing trap was positive for West Nile virus.
According to the city, the amount of pesticide applied by its trucks is not harmful to people or pets, though residents may choose to limit exposure while spraying is underway.
The city is also reminding residents to empty standing water around their homes, use mosquito repellent and take extra precautions outdoors from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
