Momentum met a quick turnaround for the Benbrook Lady Bobcats on Saturday morning.
Less than 48 hours after a strong win over Western Hills, the Lady Bobcats were back on the floor at Wilkerson-Greines for a district matchup against the Eastern Hills Lady Highlanders, the team sitting atop the standings.
Eastern Hills entered the game 16-9 overall and unbeaten in district play, but Benbrook showed early that they were not backing down.
The opening quarter was competitive. Grace Klaerner knocked down two timely three-pointers to keep Lady Bobcats within reach, trailing just 12-11 after one quarter of play. It was a confident start for the Lady Bobcats against a team known for its pressure and pace.
The Lady Highlanders began to pull away in the second quarter by increasing defensive pressure and disrupting the Lady Bobcats’ ability to execute their offense. Senior forward Kayden Sherman proved difficult to contain inside, while Maddy Blocker and McKenzie Brookshier helped keep the Lady Bobcats close.
At halftime, the Lady Bobcats trailed 24-19 and remained very much in the game.
The third quarter shifted the balance. The Lady Highlanders limited open looks for Klaerner and capitalized on turnovers and transition chances. Despite continued effort from Blocker and Guiliana Lucero, Sherman controlled the middle and pushed the lead to 45-29 by the end of the quarter.
From there, Eastern Hills maintained control and pulled away for a 56-37 district win.
Lucero, Blocker, and Klaerner each finished with eight points, with additional scoring coming from the bench. The loss moves the Lady Bobcats to 11-18 overall and 7-3 in district play, currently third in the standings.
Next up is a pivotal home matchup against Carter Riverside this coming Friday at Benbrook Middle-High School. The night will mark the final home game of the season, along with Senior Night and Teacher Appreciation Night.
It is a chance for the community to show up, be loud, and support the Lady Bobcats as they close the regular season. So, see you there!
