Friday night inside the gym at Benbrook Middle-High School felt bigger than a box score. It was Senior Night, Teacher Appreciation Night, and the final home game of the season for the Benbrook Lady Bobcats.

Coming off a tough loss to Eastern Hills, the Lady Bobcats entered the night 11-18 overall and second in the district, hoping to steady themselves against the Carter Riverside Lady Eagles.

Seniors Juliana Velasquez and Rachel Mโ€™Pinda were honored before tipoff, and the crowd was ready to respond.

The opening quarter did not go as planned. Carter Riverside struck early, and Benbrook struggled to find rhythm offensively. Despite defensive pressure that created turnovers, missed shots, and free throws, the Lady Bobcats trailed 11-4 after one.

The second quarter brought more resistance.

Guiliana Lucero and McKinzie Brookshier combined to get Benbrook on the board at the line, but Carter Riverside guards Dโ€™Ani Wilson and Massiny Sullivan proved difficult to contain. Wilson finished with 20 points, while Sullivan recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

At halftime, Benbrook trailed 21-12, but everything changed after the break.

Grace Klaerner came alive in the third quarter, igniting the gym with a deep three, then another, then a strong mix of drives and pull-up jumpers when the defense adjusted. Maddy Blocker added timely scoring, and the Lady Bobcats closed the gap to 31-26 heading into the fourth.

The final quarter delivered drama. Lucero and Brookshier fouled out, forcing the Lady Bobcats to rely on depth against a Carter Riverside team firmly in the bonus. Still, the Lady Bobcats kept fighting.

Mareah Sainz led the offense late, setting up a Blocker layup to cut the deficit to seven. Moments later, Klaerner sparked the crowd with a steal and quick score, then followed with another takeaway and basket to make it a three-point game, 38-41, with just over a minute left.

The comeback was within reach, but free throws told the final story.

The Lady Eagles converted enough chances at the line, going 6-12, while the Lady Bobcats missed 6 key opportunities in the closing quarter and seconds remaining in the game. When time expired, the Lady Bobcats were left with a hard-earned but painful loss on a night meant to celebrate.

Klaerner led Benbrook with 19 points. Sainz and Blocker each finished with six as the bench filled in the rest.

The loss drops the Lady Bobcats to 11-19 overall and third in the district with one game remaining. They will close the regular season on the road against Dunbar at Wilkerson-Greines tomorrow night, a team they defeated earlier this month.

Win or lose, this group of young ladies has shown heart, resilience, and fight all season long. One more night remains for Bobcat Nation to show up and support them as the season comes to a close. We look forward to seeing you there tomorrow!
