Senior Night is never just about the scoreboard.
It is about the years behind it, the practices no one remembers, the bus rides, the friendships, the losses, the wins, and the final time a group of seniors gets to wear that uniform at home.
Last Thursday, April 23, Western Hills baseball gave its seniors a night full of emotion and one unforgettable battle on the field.
The Cougars found themselves in a back-and-forth matchup that had all the tension Senior Night usually brings and then some. After building a 9–7 lead through five innings, Western Hills looked ready to close it out, but the game kept swinging both ways.
With four lead changes and both teams refusing to back down, the game was tied heading into the seventh inning.
In the end, it was a true heartbreaker, as the Cougars fell just short in a 10–9 loss.
Still, the final score did not define the night.
This Western Hills team has spent the season pushing through adversity, and once again, players answered the moment. Tyler Johnston and Dante Mendoza led the way with strong performances, helping set the tone and showing the grit that has defined Cougar baseball this year.
For the seniors, it was one last home game. For the team, it was another reminder of how much fight still lives in this group.
Sometimes Senior Night ends with a win. Sometimes it ends with a tough loss.
But for Western Hills, it ended with something just as important, pride in the effort, pride in the seniors, and pride in never backing down.
