What started as a close crosstown rivalry turned into a second-half rout Friday night as the Benbrook Bobcats pulled away from the Western Hills Cougars for a convincing 48-14 Senior Night victory at Herman Clark Stadium.

The night was especially meaningful as Benbrook honored 19 senior football players, two Emerald Line dancers, five cheerleaders, and graduating members of the band, athletic training, and management teams.

Entering the game 5-3 and without standout running back Quentin Thomas, sidelined by a high ankle sprain, the Bobcats struggled early with a turnover on downs and a fumble. Western Hills (2-6) had its own offensive troubles before Benbrook quarterback Lucas Davis found Evan Smith for an 8-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

The Cougars answered with an 8-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 7-6. Davis responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Newman, but Western Hills battled back to tie the game at 14 with just over two minutes remaining before halftime.

With time running out, Davis led a two-minute scoring drive, finishing it himself with a 1-yard touchdown run just 10 seconds before the break. Benbrook headed into halftime leading 20-14.

The Bobcats dominated the second half.

Benbrook’s defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and giving the offense opportunities to pull away. Davis connected with Newman for a 25-yard touchdown, while Izaiah Smith added a 13-yard rushing score to stretch the lead to 34-14 after three quarters.

The Cougars’ struggles continued in the fourth as Ayden Bruck recovered another fumble. Davis then found Dorien Johnson for a 19-yard touchdown before Jayden Deane intercepted a Western Hills pass, setting up Smith’s second rushing touchdown from three yards out.

By the final whistle, Benbrook had scored 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Davis finished 19-of-34 passing for 240 yards, while Johnson hauled in nine receptions for 137 yards. Defensively, Austin Cross recorded five tackles, with Cash Bergen, Kian Jensen, and Bruck contributing fumble recoveries.

The victory improved Benbrook to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district play, placing the Bobcats third in the standings as they pursue a postseason berth.

Benbrook closes its regular season Thursday, November 5, against the Dunbar Wildcats at Handley Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Western Hills falls to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in district play. The Cougars finish their regular season Friday against Diamond Hill-Jarvis at 7 p.m.

For Benbrookโ€™s seniors, it was a fitting way to close out their final home game, beating their crosstown rivals in front of family, friends, and the home crowd.
