For the second straight year, Benbrook and Castleberry came down to the final seconds. This time, the heartbreak belonged to the Bobcats.
After waiting through a 45-minute lightning delay Friday night at W.O. Barnes Stadium, Benbrook and Castleberry traded big plays, momentum swings, and plenty of points before the Lions escaped with a 50-49 win.
Benbrook fans made the short trip in force, and the Bobcats gave them something to cheer about almost immediately.
Running back Quentin Thomas broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown on the Bobcats opening possession, with Corbin Biggins adding the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
A Castleberry turnover quickly gave the Bobcats another opportunity. Facing fourth down, a bad snap sailed through quarterback Lucas Davis’ legs.
Davis chased it down, recovered, and somehow turned a broken play into six points, finding a receiver near the front of the end zone. Biggins’ kick made it 14-0 less than two minutes after the first score.
Castleberry answered just as quickly.
The Lions found success on the ground and scored twice late in the opening quarter, including a touchdown in the final seconds, to take a 15-14 lead.
Thomas put the Bobcats back in front with his second touchdown, but the Lions responded with three straight scores and built a 35-20 advantage late in the second quarter.
Benbrook needed an answer before halftime, and Davis provided one.
Rolling left, Davis found JJ Robinson near the back corner of the end zone for a toe-tapping touchdown. The Bobcats converted the two-point attempt and went into halftime trailing 35-28.
The Bobcats came out of the break with a different defensive response. After Castleberry had moved the ball consistently in the first half, Benbrook kept the Lions scoreless throughout the third quarter.
Thomas eventually broke the stalemate with his third touchdown of the night. Biggins’ extra point tied it at 35.
Then came a fourth quarter that felt a lot like the teams’ 47-45 Benbrook thriller from a year ago.
Cash Bergen scored from a yard out to give the Bobcats a 42-35 lead. The Lions answered less than two minutes later with a 46-yard touchdown run to tie it again.
But the Bobcats struck right back.
Davis found Dorien Johnson streaking downfield for a 46-yard touchdown. Biggins connected again, and the Bobcats led 49-42 with just under eight minutes remaining.
That lead held until a critical sequence inside the final two minutes.
The Bobcats lined up to punt on fourth down with Davis, who also handles punting duties, taking the snap. What initially looked like a fake punt was a disrupted play after an unfortunate missed block that forced Davis to avoid the rush. The Lions took possession at the Benbrook 20.
The Bobcats’ defense made the Lions work for it, but with 55 seconds remaining, Castleberry scored and converted the two-point attempt to take a 50-49 lead.
Benbrook still had one last chance.
With 4.4 seconds remaining and the ball at the Castleberry 47, Davis took the shotgun snap and was flushed to his right. On the run, he launched one final pass toward a group of receivers near the 10-yard line.
The ball was knocked away, and Castleberry’s sideline erupted while Benbrook’s fell silent.
One year after the Bobcats handed the Lions a two-point loss, Castleberry returned the favor by the narrowest possible margin.
Benbrook drops to 2-1 and now gets a week off before returning Friday, September 25th, against Southwest, which enters the matchup following a 49-0 win over Sunset.
