Storms and lightning delayed Friday night football across Fort Worth, but once Western Hills took the field at Farrington Field, the Cougars created a storm of their own.
Looking for their first win after an 0-2 start, Western Hills rolled past the North Side Steers 45-0 behind 448 yards of offense and a defense that never allowed North Side to get on the scoreboard.
Ashton Richardson helped set the tone early, rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns despite playing only the first half. Quarterback Tyler Johnston completed 14 of 17 passes for 189 yards and added a rushing touchdown as the Cougars built a 13-0 first-quarter lead.
Then the defense joined the scoring.
With North Side looking to the outside passing game in the second quarter, D’Tyree Faulk jumped the route and returned an interception for a touchdown. Gabriel Christion followed with a 66-yard touchdown run, and another Richardson score sent the Cougars into halftime leading 32-0.
Faulk, who finished with 97 rushing yards, added another touchdown in the third quarter as the Cougars continued to pull away. Defensively, Brayden Burns, Mauricio Martinez and Cam Carter joined Faulk in helping the Cougars secure the shutout.
The 45-0 win moves Western Hills to 1-2 and gives the Cougars some momentum heading into their bye week.
They return Sept. 23 for their first district matchup of the season against Dunbar at 7 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
