The Benbrook Bobcats returned to Herman Clark Stadium Thursday night looking to bounce back from last week’s loss to Eastern Hills.
Instead, Kennedale’s powerful rushing attack proved too much as the Wildcats handed Benbrook its second straight district loss, 42-20.
Kennedale entered the matchup 4-1 overall and undefeated in district play, bringing its traditional Power-T offense against a Bobcat defense that had struggled to contain opponents this season.
Benbrook opened with a promising drive deep into Wildcat territory, but penalties pushed the Bobcats back near midfield and forced a punt that pinned Kennedale at its own 2-yard line.
That field position didn’t last long. Kennedale broke loose for a 93-yard touchdown run, then added a 34-yard scoring run to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Bobcats answered early in the second when quarterback Lucas Davis connected with Cash Bergen for a 13-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-7 with 8:53 remaining before halftime.
But Kennedale responded with touchdown runs of 68 and 3 yards, sending Benbrook into the locker room trailing 28-7, its largest halftime deficit of the season.
Any hopes of a second-half comeback took another hit when the Wildcats opened the third quarter with four consecutive running plays, finishing the drive with a 51-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 35-7.
Benbrook continued battling into the fourth quarter. Under pressure, Davis launched a 40-yard pass into traffic that Evan Smith leaped for, bobbled, and secured for a touchdown. The missed extra point left the Bobcats trailing 35-13.
Kennedale answered with another rushing touchdown before Benbrook put together one of its better drives of the night.
Quentin Thomas helped move the ball on the ground, Davis found Tyler Newman for 24 yards, then connected with Dorien Johnson for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 42-20 with 2:48 remaining.
The Bobcats recovered an onside kick and later regained possession following a Kennedale fumble, giving themselves one final scoring opportunity. Davis moved Benbrook to the Wildcats’ 15-yard line with a 28-yard completion to Newman, but an interception near the goal line ended the drive.
Despite the loss, Davis completed 17 of 30 passes for 250 yards, while Thomas rushed 15 times for 88 yards. Johnson finished with five receptions for 76 yards.
Benbrook totaled 374 yards of offense, including 251 passing and 123 rushing, but committed three turnovers. Defensively, the Bobcats surrendered 418 rushing yards, with Kennedale completing the game without a passing yard.
The loss drops Benbrook to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district play, currently third behind Kennedale and Eastern Hills, which defeated Western Hills 40-8 Thursday night at Farrington Field.
Benbrook will look to end its two-game skid when the Bobcats host Carter Riverside on Thursday, October 15, at 7 p.m. at Herman Clark Stadium.
