Opening day came with a quick lesson in resilience for the Benbrook Bobcats.
The morning began at Everman High School against Paschal. The Bobcats struck first in the opening inning when an error brought home a run. That would be the only score of the game for the Bobcats. Paschal answered steadily and pulled away for an 8-1 win.
Hudson Stockton and Sebastian Martinez-Colon each recorded a hit. Dan Stiefvater started and took the loss, while Trentin Hornbeck provided solid relief, working four and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts.
There was little time to dwell on it. Just hours later, the Bobcats were back on the field against Haltom. This time, Benbrook responded.
Martinez-Colon reached and helped spark early scoring in the second inning. The game stayed tight through the middle frames before the Bobcats broke it open in the sixth.
An error, a Martinez-Colon triple, and a Kody Kuhl single pushed runs across. The Bobcats added insurance in the seventh to secure a 7-2 win.
Stockton drove in two runs. Martinez-Colon, Ethan Tucker, and Kuhl each added a hit. Evan Smith earned the win with five innings of work and seven strikeouts, and Jakim Velasquez closed it out with a scoreless inning.
After a split on day one, the Bobcats sit at 1-1 and return to Everman to face Bridgeport at 1 p.m. and Abilene at 3 p.m.
Opening day showed both the growing pains and the grit of a team finding its rhythm.
