It felt like one of those playoff nights where every pitch mattered, and everyone in the stands knew it.
Benbrook and Brock, two programs that have built a recent history of tight, emotional matchups, met again on Thursday to open their Class 4A Area playoff series.
The result lived up to the rivalry, with a tense, low-scoring game that stayed undecided deep into extra innings.
Benbrook came in ready, handing the ball to Chevy Martinez, fresh off a remarkable no-hitter in the previous round. He followed it up with another strong outing, going seven innings and allowing just one run, none earned, while striking out 10.
Brock’s pitching matched the effort, keeping the Bobcats’ bats quiet most of the night.
However, an early Bobcat error gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and for a while, that single run looked like it might hold. Hits were scarce, with both teams relying on patience at the plate, drawing walks, and taking advantage of any small opening.
But the Bobcats found their answer in the fourth inning when Austin Cross lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

From there, the tension only built on the field and in the stands. Fans on both sides stayed intensely engaged, every call and every pitch carrying weight as the innings moved along without a breakthrough.
By the end of seven, the game remained locked, sending both teams into extras with their seasons hanging in the balance.
In the eighth, the Eagles found their moment. After a pair of runners advanced into scoring position, a sharply hit ball down the line brought home the winning run, sealing the 2-1 victory and giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Offensively for the Bobcats, Hudson Stockton, Brennan Barton, and Ethan Tucker each recorded a hit, while Cross drove in the team’s lone run.
Now the focus shifts quickly. The Bobcats return to the field tonight for a must-win Game 2 at 7 p.m. at Weatherford College. With the season on the line, the Bobcats will look to respond the way playoff teams have to stay alive, living to play another game.
