Cougars Soccer Show Grit, Grab Win, and Head Into District Play.

The JV boys soccer team at Western Hills High School continues to show fight, growth, and heart as the season rolls on.

Coming out of the FWISD Showcase Tournament, the Cougars faced a tough slate against larger schools and did not back down.

Against Haltom, goalkeeper Alexis Zepeda came up with several big saves, but the Cougars fell 2-0. A strong start against Arlington Heights turned into a 3-1 loss, with Elian Herrera finding the net late.

Saturday brought the biggest test. With just 11 players and no substitutes, Western Hills struck first against Chisholm Trail on a counter finished by Herrera after an assist from Alex Álvarez. Herrera added another, but fatigue caught up, and the final ended 5-2.

Even in the losses, individual efforts stood out. Herrera continued his hot streak with six goals across five matches, while Ian Axel Muniz-Martinez logged every minute of action, holding the back line together.

That resilience showed up again Tuesday night against Lake Worth.

The Cougars battled to a 3-2 win, evening their record at 4-4. Herrera opened the scoring after pressure from Iker Martinez and a final ball from Sebastian Iriarte. Adam Jupiter followed with a goal on a quick counter, and Álvarez came off the bench early to make it 3-0.

Lake Worth responded with two quick goals before halftime, but Western Hills held on.

With both regular goalkeepers unavailable, Kelvin Zapata stepped in and delivered when it mattered most, including a clutch point-blank save on a free kick in the final minute to seal the win.

Friday’s matchup with Mineral Wells was canceled due to weather, but the Cougars are back in action Tuesday as district play begins at Scarborough-Handley Field against YMLA. JV kicks off at 6:30 PM, followed by Varsity at 8:00 PM.

This group keeps showing it will not quit. District play is next, and the Cougars are ready.
