The JV boys soccer team at Western Hills High School, the Cougars, is sending an early message this season.
Through a demanding stretch of games, the Cougars have jumped out to a strong 3-1 start, showing depth, resilience, and confidence well beyond their years.
The run began over winter break with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Polytechnic. Sebastian Iriarte found the back of the net, while Ender Zambrano anchored a defensive effort that helped Manuel Velazco earn the clean sheet.
Last week brought long road trips and tougher tests at the Mustang 77 Tournament in Dallas and Waxahachie.
Despite missing five starters, Western Hills opened tournament play with a convincing 2-0 win over Life Oak Cliff.
Moises Lopez scored early, Douglas Cova finished a sharp team buildup started by Elian Herrera, and Victor Lewis controlled the midfield throughout. Alexis Zepeda stood tall in goal to seal the shutout.
Later that day, the Cougars battled a strong Life Waxahachie squad, falling 3-1 after Herrera converted a late penalty.
The next day, with the roster stretched even thinner, Western Hills responded with heart. Herrera scored twice, Lopez added another, and the Cougars rolled to a 3-0 win over Life Wax JVB.
The Cougars finished the tournament as runners-up and now turn their focus to the Fort Worth ISD Tournament, where three 5A opponents await. If the opening weeks are any indication, this group is just getting started.
