Sugar Ants Are Invading Benbrook Homes This Summer.

•

If you’ve been staring at a trail of tiny ants wondering, “Why are they so bad this year?” Or if you’ve walked into your kitchen lately and wondered where all those tiny ants came from, you’re apparently not alone in Benbrook.

The hot, dry summer seems to have brought the little pests indoors with a vengeance. One local homeowner who reached out to Benbrook Life shared that “sugar ants” have occasionally been a problem in the past, but nothing like this year.

Vinegar and water? Tried it. Caulking tiny holes? Tried that, too.

The problem is that these ants are incredibly small. Seal one opening, and they seem to find another a few feet away. Kitchens and bathrooms can be especially attractive when ants are searching for water during hot, dry weather.

So what can you do?

The most common approach shared locally is to treat the problem from both sides of the wall.

Ant bait such as Terro can help with ants already inside, while treating the exterior perimeter and tracking down where they’re entering may get closer to the source. It’s also worth checking weep holes, windows, gutters, and tree branches touching the house.

Whatever method you use, follow the product label carefully, particularly around children and pets. And know this: You’re not alone in this invasion of the sugar ants.  Share your remedies and thoughts below.
