A few hours of hard work made a big difference at Benbrook Lake, where community volunteers collected nearly 1,000 pounds of trash during a recent cleanup.

On September 26, 20 volunteers joined three park rangers at Longhorn Day Use Park to celebrate National Public Lands Day, spending a combined 59 volunteer hours picking up litter along the shoreline, roadways, and surrounding parkland.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fort Worth District, the group filled 49 contractor bags with approximately 980 pounds of trash, cleaning 10.5 acres, half a mile of shoreline, and a quarter-mile of roadway.

The effort was supported by Tarrant Regional Water District and Keep Fort Worth Beautiful, which helped provide supplies and recruit volunteers.

In an October 8 Facebook post, the Corps thanked everyone who gave their time to help care for Benbrook Lake.

That’s nearly half a ton of litter removed from a place many Benbrook families enjoy year-round.
