Thursday marked a big moment for Texas and for the men and women who protect and serve.
On May 16, state lawmakers in both the Texas House and Senate took a bold and compassionate step by officially designating May 14, 2025, as Moral Injury Awareness Day. This move puts a spotlight on the mental and emotional wounds that many first responders, firefighters, and military personnel silently carry.
Leaders from Benbrook and across Fort Worth, including Mayor Mattie Parker and members of the Fort Worth Fire Department, were at the Capitol to show their support. The day included meetings with Governor Greg Abbott and recognition from both chambers of the legislature. At the center of the effort was the “R3: Respond. Restore. Resolve.” initiative, which is helping bring healing and hope to those who’ve experienced moral injury through their service.
This isn’t just a symbolic gesture. It’s a meaningful step toward better mental health support for those who’ve borne the weight of protecting others. For Benbrook residents, it’s a reminder that our first responders need more than thanks. They need real support, real solutions, and community backing as they navigate the aftermath of the toughest parts of their work.
To all who made this happen, thank you for leading the way.
