FORT WORTH, Texas — As frigid temperatures and snow blanketed Tarrant County in these last few days, many experiencing homelessness have found refuge in an expanded initiative, Room in the Inn, that provides emergency overnight shelter for unhoused individuals during extreme weather.
Since 2007, the program has partnered with True Worth Place and Presbyterian Night Shelter to shelter single men.
However, this year, St. Stephen became the first church in over a decade to offer shelter to women, including 30-year-old Nathaly Vento, who is currently experiencing homelessness, as part of a new pilot project.
Vento, who often stays at True Worth Place, appreciated the warmth and hospitality, finding comfort in shared meals and conversations, something that reminded her of childhood traditions.
This initiative is responding to the growing need—38% of the homeless population in Tarrant County are women, many of whom face homelessness due to domestic violence, trafficking, or assault.
The church has trained volunteers to cater to the specific needs of women, particularly those who have experienced trauma, and aims to provide not only shelter but also a space for healing and community.
