Tarrant County Enacts Outdoor Burning Ban Amid Severe Drought.

TARRANT COUNTY, TX — As Tarrant County faces extreme drought conditions, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court has issued a 90-day ban on outdoor burning for unincorporated areas, effective Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The ban, aimed at safeguarding lives and property, prohibits outdoor burning without approval from the Tarrant County Fire Marshal’s Office, with certain exceptions for outdoor cooking, fire pits for social gatherings, and welding.

A Necessary Step to Protect the Community

The severe dry conditions prompted Tarrant County Fire Marshal David Butler to request the ban, which the Texas A&M Forest Service fully supports. The ban is a proactive measure to mitigate the risk of wildfires during this period of heightened fire danger.

“This is about taking steps to protect our residents, homes, and businesses from the threat of fire,” Butler said. “We encourage everyone to be extra cautious and follow the guidelines to help prevent any potential disasters.”

What the Ban Includes

Residents are reminded that outdoor burning is strictly prohibited unless expressly approved by the Fire Marshal’s Office. Violating the ban is classified as a Class C misdemeanor, which can result in fines up to $500. However, the ban allows for outdoor cooking, welding, and using fire pits for social gatherings under specific safety guidelines.

Safety Recommendations for Residents

Interim Fire Marshal Butler also provided several tips for residents, especially those in rural or unincorporated areas, to further reduce the risk of fires:

  • Create a Safety Perimeter: Keep a 30-foot perimeter around homes and outbuildings free of dry grass, weeds, and other combustible materials.
  • Clear Combustible Debris: Remove any unnecessary vegetation and other flammable materials from around your home.
  • Have a Water Source Ready: Keep hoses and water supplies easily accessible in case a small fire ignites.

“We’re asking everyone to stay vigilant and do their part to help keep our community safe during these dry conditions,” Butler added.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

For detailed information on outdoor cooking, fire pit use, welding safety, and other fire-related guidelines, residents are encouraged to visit the official Tarrant County website at Tarrant County Outdoor Burning Ban.

Tarrant County officials are urging the community to remain cautious during this period and follow all safety precautions. By working together, residents can help protect their properties and prevent devastating wildfires.
