As early voting continues in Benbrook, a spirited debate has taken over local social media groups, highlighting just how divided some residents feel about the direction of city leadership.
The latest controversy began when a resident praised the current Benbrook City Council while expressing doubts about challengers Ryan, Sean, and Derrick. Her post, shared across several community Facebook groups, sparked immediate backlash and accusations of bias.
In at least one group, Positively Benbrook, the post was deleted for violating a “no political posts” rule, but not before several opposing commenters were reportedly banned—raising questions about fairness and moderation practices, particularly since a sitting council member and their spouse help manage the group.
The debate quickly grew beyond Facebook, with residents weighing in on the city’s broader issues, including development in Trinity Estates, transparency in the Economic Development Corporation, and accountability in local government spending. Many residents voiced frustration over what they see as political favoritism and a lack of accountability, urging neighbors to make their voices heard at the polls.
Former FWISD Board Trustee Dr. Michael Ryan joined the conversation, reminding residents that the Benbrook City Council’s influence over schools is limited, primarily focusing on safety partnerships with FWISD rather than district operations.
Others cautioned council-affiliated administrators that banning citizens from community discussion pages could pose legal concerns, citing First Amendment protections for pages used to discuss city business.
While disagreements continue online, one theme stands out: residents are passionate about the future of their city. From infrastructure and development to transparency and civic participation, many agree that the best way to shape Benbrook’s direction is by voting.
