Lights Out Texas: Helping Birds Safely Migrate Over Fort Worth Skies.

BENBROOK, TX – As night falls across Texas, tens of thousands of migratory birds are quietly flying overhead, navigating their way south toward warmer climates.

Between August 15 and November 30, the Central and Southern Plains serve as a major migratory pathway, with peak migration running from September 5 to October 29.

To protect these birds, Texas Parks and Wildlife is asking residents and businesses to join the Lights Out Texas initiative. By turning off or dimming non-essential outdoor lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., you can help prevent disorientation and collisions that often occur when birds mistake bright lights for navigational cues.

Just last night, more than 31,000 birds crossed the skies above Fort Worth. With so many passing through, even small efforts by homeowners and businesses can make a big difference.
