Migratory bird nesting, particularly by egrets and herons, has posed ongoing challenges in Benbrook and neighboring areas over the past decade. To address this issue, the City of Benbrook is teaming up with local neighborhoods to prevent and reduce nesting for the upcoming season.
Taking action during the fall and winter months is critical before the birds return in the spring. Key steps include trimming tree canopies to allow sunlight to reach between limbs, removing abandoned nests, and clearing underbrush.
Local arborist Jason Atwood, who has worked on this issue for over ten years, shared his insights on how to manage bird nesting. According to Atwood, preventative measures should begin with pruning trees, as dense canopies attract birds. He warns against over-pruning, which can harm tree health, and recommends working with a reputable arborist.
While some deterrents, like noisemakers and shiny objects, may not be effective in the long run, Atwood notes that inflatable predators, when placed high in the canopy, can help keep birds away.
