A week after grinding through a 1-4 tournament stretch, the Benbrook Lady Bobcats found themselves staring at a tall task to open district play.
Diamond Hill Jarvis entered Tuesday night unbeaten at 9-0 and riding a nine-game winning streak. Benbrook came in at 4-7, still searching for consistency.
Would they find it by the end of the night?
Well, junior pitcher Natalya Muzquiz took the circle and battled through early pressure. Defensive miscues allowed the Lady Eagles to build a 5-1 lead by the second inning, even after Maddy Davilaโs RBI single helped tie the game in the top half of the frame.
From there, Benbrook settled in.
Muzquiz found her rhythm and held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The offense began to chip away. A run in the third and two more in the fifth, highlighted again by Davila at the plate, kept the Lady Bobcats within reach.
Then came the turning point. Trailing 6-4 entering the sixth, Benbrook erupted for six runs. Esperanza Garza delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 12-6.
The Lady Bobcats added one more in the seventh and closed out a 13-7 victory that snapped the Lady Eaglesโ winning streak and handed them their first district loss.
Muzquiz went the distance, allowing seven hits and seven runs, only two earned, while striking out nine. Davila led the charge with three hits. Jolie Hornbeck drove in four runs. Kaylee Boswell and Mya Vasquez each recorded multiple hits, and Maelee Lindley drew three walks as part of a patient nine-walk team effort. The defense even turned a double play to help seal the momentum shift.
Benbrook now sits at 5-7 overall and 1-0 in district play, currently atop the standings. The Lady Bobcats head next to the Springtown and Mineral Wells Tournament.
For a team that has shown flashes all season, Tuesday night felt like more than a win. It felt like a reset.
