FWISD Sees Early Gains in Reading and Math Scores.

Benbrook families following Fort Worth ISD’s progress got a promising update this week.

Superintendent Karen Molinar shared early STAAR results from the spring 2025 testing period during the June 10 school board meeting, and the takeaway was simple: improvement is happening, especially in the early grades.

Reading scores for grades 3 through 8 remained steady or improved, with third- and fourth-grade students showing the most progress across both reading and math. District leaders are especially encouraged by the fact that 37% of third graders now meet reading benchmarks, surpassing the district’s 2025 goal of 33%. A similar math milestone was met, with 34% of third graders hitting grade-level expectations.

While high school End-of-Course exams yielded mixed results, the district recorded gains in Biology and Algebra I, despite dips in English I, English II, and U.S. History.

Not all the data is cause for celebration. Fifth-grade math scores saw a slight dip compared to last year. Still, Molinar stressed that this early look, unofficial and unpolished, highlights that recent changes, such as more focused instructional support and leadership development, are beginning to pay off.

Starting this fall, all FWISD classrooms will follow a new, consistent lesson structure, allowing teachers more time to teach and less time to plan. Middle schools will also switch to 90-minute class blocks.

Molinar closed by saying the momentum from this year will drive them into 2026 with confidence. The goal for next year? Continue trending up in reading and math and lay the groundwork for bigger wins ahead.
