A recent grocery delivery in Benbrook has neighbors talking after a bag of mini potatoes arrived with an unusual green color.
While it may look harmless, green potatoes can signal the presence of solanine, a natural toxin that develops when potatoes are exposed to too much light. High levels of solanine can cause nausea, headaches, and in severe cases, poisoning.
Experts note that small patches of green can sometimes be peeled away, but if the potato is strongly discolored, has a bitter taste, or gives off an unusual smell, it should be discarded. The safest option is not to eat heavily green potatoes at all.
Shoppers are encouraged to check their produce as soon as it arrives and return unsafe items to the store. With food prices already high, reporting the problem helps ensure stores stay aware and keep shelves safe for everyone.
