This past Thursday, the historic walls of St. Stephen Presbyterian Church resonated with the joyous sounds of Christmas as the Benbrook Pyramid Choir presented A Holiday Celebration.
Choirs from Benbrook Elementary, Rolling Hills Elementary, Westpark Elementary, and Benbrook Middle-High School joined voices to deliver an awe-inspiring evening of holiday melodies to a standing-room-only crowd brimming with family, friends, and holiday cheer.
As the clock struck 7:00 p.m., the evening began with the thunderous tones of the churchโs grand pipe organ playing Joy to the World, setting the tone for the magical night ahead.
The Benbrook Middle School Choir, under the direction of Mr. Jacob Brown, took their places and captivated the audience with a heartfelt medley of songs, including Dormi, Dormi bel Bambin, Festival Alleluia, The Shepherdโs Spiritual, Sleigh Ride, and Please Donโt Sing Another โFa La Laโ.
The cathedral’s acoustics perfectly complemented their harmonious voices, creating a soundscape that wrapped the audience in the season’s warmth.
During the intermission, familiar Christmas carols once again echoed through the pipe organ as elementary choirs from Benbrook, Rolling Hills, and Westpark prepared to take the stage.
Directed by Mrs. Maria Nelson, Mr. Tyler Nessi, and Ms. Ariel Hernandez, these young performers delighted the audience with charming renditions of The Nutcracker (in about 3 minutes), Hot Chocolate, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Their animated gestures and infectious enthusiasm drew smiles and applause, proving that holiday cheer is best delivered with youthful exuberance.
The night reached its pinnacle with the award-winning Benbrook High School Choirs, led by Dr. Emily Saenz.
The all-female treble choir mesmerized the audience with an ethereal performance of O Antiqui Sancti, followed by the theatrical brilliance of A Puppetโs Dream, complete with puppet-like movements synchronized to the music.
Accompanied by Parker Dorff on percussion and Joseph Wilkinson on bass, the choir displayed artistry and precision that brought the room to life.
Their final solo performance, Where the Light Begins, showcased the choirโs depth and range before the full choir joined them to perform the Christmas classic O Come, All Ye Faithful. The night ended on the highest of notes, literally and figuratively speaking, with the lively and foot-tapping Children, Go Where I Send Thee, a crescendo of talent and energy that left the audience clapping, swaying, and filled with holiday joy.
Special recognition goes to the dedicated choir directors, the BMHS Pyramid Administrators, the BMHS Choir Boosters, and all those behind the scenes who made the night possible, including Mr. Jesse Cannon, Ms. Elizabeth Thanker, Dr. Ruben Alcala, and Mr. Don Devous.
A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Jordan Smith for his stunning organ performances and to St. Stephen Presbyterian Church for providing such a magnificent venue, both visually and acoustically.
This evening was more than a performanceโit was a celebration of community, talent, and the spirit of the holidays that will resonate in the hearts of all who attended.
