Mackey Looks to Continue Her Service to Benbrook.

While Laura Mackey wasn’t born in Benbrook, somewhere between raising her kids here, serving as a PTA president, meeting neighbors and simply doing life in the community, Benbrook became home.

Now she wants to keep serving it.

Mackey is seeking reelection to Benbrook City Council Place 6, where she has served since 2018. She also currently serves as mayor pro tem.

“I now claim Benbrook as my hometown,” Mackey said. “The community we have found here, you will find nowhere else.”

Her story began nearby in Richland Hills, where she grew up in a large family with migrant parents and spent plenty of time at her grandmother’s house. She later attended the University of New Mexico and finished at the University of Texas at Arlington before building a nearly 20-year career in health care.

But much of what shaped her involvement in Benbrook happened closer to home.

As a parent and PTA president, Mackey saw the community through the everyday experiences of local families. That perspective followed her to City Council.

Sometimes that means looking at the bigger issues facing the city. Other times, it can be something as ordinary as asking why dads don’t have a changing table when they need one. Mackey advocated for family-friendly changing tables in Benbrook facilities, including men’s restrooms.

It fits how she describes herself: an all-in person who wants the facts, but also wants to understand the story behind them.

And after eight years on the council, her reason for wanting to continue is still close to home.

Her children are growing up here. Her family has built relationships here. When her time in public service is eventually finished, Mackey says she hopes she can look back knowing she made a positive, lasting impact while helping Benbrook remain the kind of community her family fell in love with.

“It’s the people you meet and do life with,” Mackey said.

For Mackey, that’s ultimately what this reelection campaign comes back to. Benbrook may not be where her story started, but it’s the place she now proudly calls home.
