Western Hills High School’s Cougar Band turned months of practice into significant results this past weekend at the Region 30 Band auditions.
Fifteen students stepped into a highly competitive field, performing prepared etudes and scales against musicians from across Fort Worth and nearby districts, including Kennedale, Godley, Springtown, Eagle Mountain, Lake Worth, Alvarado, Castleberry, and more.
For many, just making it to auditions was the payoff after early mornings, late rehearsals, and plenty of nervous run-throughs at home. Out of that hard work came several standout honors, with Leyriadamaris Lopez Aguirre, Dexter Hill, and Dontae Salgado earning spots in the Region 30 Honor Ensemble.
Salgado’s achievement carries extra history for Western Hills. He advanced to the Area competition, becoming the first WHHS Band student in six years to reach that level. In early January, he will audition for a coveted place in the All-State Band, representing both his school and the Benbrook community.
All Cougar Band students who placed will return later in January for the Region 30 Clinic and Concert, where they will join top musicians from across the region. Details will be shared once the concert time is finalized.
In the meantime, neighbors do not have to wait to hear what all the effort sounds like. The Cougar Band Winter Concert 2025 is set for this Thursday at 6:30 p.m., featuring the concert band, colorguard, and small ensembles.
It is a perfect chance for Benbrook residents to cheer on these young musicians and enjoy a night of live music close to home.
