BENBROOK, TEXAS—In the last 30 days, the ongoing H5N1 bird flu outbreak has infected 13.2 million birds across the U.S., causing significant disruptions to the egg supply chain.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the illness and deaths of chickens have resulted in skyrocketing egg prices, and no immediate relief is in sight until the outbreak is controlled.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe for consumption, the shortage has hit consumers hard. Axios reports egg prices in some U.S. regions have climbed as high as $7 per dozen.
Locally, Benbrook residents are seeing varied prices across grocery stores, with some retailers introducing purchase limits to maintain stock.
