Atmos Energy Prepares for Extreme Winter Weather.

โ€ข

As the forecast predicts a major winter storm, Atmos Energy is gearing up for the challenge, staging its employees across the region to respond quickly if needed. With colder temperatures expected to impact natural gas usage, the utility provider advises customers to use energy wisely while keeping homes safe and reducing energy costs.

Energy Efficiency Tips for the Winter

During extreme cold, heating bills can skyrocket. Atmos Energy offers several simple yet effective tips to help customers stay comfortable without breaking the bank:

  • Avoid Using Ovens or Stovetops for Heat: Never use kitchen appliances like ovens or stovetops to heat your home. These are unsafe alternatives for space heating and can lead to dangerous situations.
  • Protect Your Natural Gas Meter: While natural gas meters are weather-resistant, snow and ice can affect their operation. Use a broom or brush to gently clear snow and ice from the meter. Never use hard objects to chip away at the ice. If you have concerns, call the Atmos Energy emergency line at 866.322.8667.
  • Clear Vents and Prevent Carbon Monoxide Buildup: Ensure that external vents for dryers and other natural gas appliances are blockage-free to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Consult a licensed plumber or contractor if you’re unsure about proper venting.
  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: To avoid costly plumbing repairs, let faucets drip slightly, keep cabinet doors open, and seal windows and doors to keep warmth inside.
  • Adjust Your Thermostat: Save energy and money by setting your thermostat to 68ยฐF during the day and 58ยฐF when you’re away from home (if safe to do so).
