Some players leave behind records. Others leave a standard. Benbrook’s Sydney Chavez did both, and it didn’t take her long to begin writing the next chapter.
The 2026 Benbrook Middle-High School graduate and Lady Bobcats’ all-time leading scorer recorded her first collegiate goal Wednesday, helping Texas Wesleyan earn a 4-2 road victory over Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas.
For Bobcat fans who followed Chavez throughout her Benbrook career, the early impact should feel familiar. Chavez built her reputation at Benbrook as a relentless scorer and playmaker, including reaching 90 career goals during her senior season.
Now wearing No. 7 for the Rams, the freshman is already finding the net at the college level.
Texas Wesleyan and Tabor were tied 2-2 midway through the second half when Sahara Gipson scored her second goal of the match in the 68th minute to put the Rams ahead. Seven minutes later, Chavez scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Amelia Roach, giving Texas Wesleyan some breathing room at 4-2.
Chavez did more than score. She led the Rams with six shots, putting four on goal, as Texas Wesleyan outshot Tabor 16-7 and improved to 1-0-1. Gipson finished with two goals and an assist, while Jimena Agular scored the Rams’ opening goal.
The Rams return home Thursday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. to face Texas A&M-Victoria.
Different jersey, same result. Chavez is already finding the back of the net as a Ram.
