After a recent veto blocked funding that would have helped feed children during summer break, concerned Benbrook residents are stepping up. With school out and many families feeling the strain, the question now is: how do we fill the gap?
The Tarrant Area Food Bank has long provided support, but recent budget cuts have left programs stretched thin. Some local schools still offer meals, and Fort Worth ISD has posted a list of participating campuses. Even so, access remains a challenge for many.
Residents are brainstorming solutions. Some are suggesting food drives to support Funky Town Fridge and WestAid, while others are exploring partnerships with local grocers like Sprouts for donations. Community-led ideas like front porch pantries are also gaining traction, with several already active in nearby neighborhoods.
This isn’t just a one-person effort. It will take a mix of creativity, collaboration, and consistency to ensure no child in Benbrook goes hungry this summer.
Want to get involved? Here are a few starting points: FWISD Summer Food Info, Front Porch Pantry Group, or Tarrant Area Food Bank.
