Is Fort Worth’s Film Industry at Risk as Lawmakers Debate Incentive Funding?

โ€ข

As Texas lawmakers prepare for the upcoming legislative session on January 14, the future of the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program (TMIIIP) hangs in the balance, with potential consequences for Fort Worth, and especially communities like Benbrook.

The program, which received a record $200 million in funding last year, has made Texas a competitive location for major film and TV productions, including Taylor Sheridanโ€™s Landman, filmed in parts in Benbrook.

Increased funding for TMIIIP could position Fort Worth as a sought-after filming destination, attracting high-budget projects and driving local economic growth. Productions like Landman have already brought substantial benefits, from hiring local crews to supporting nearby businesses like hotels, restaurants, and equipment rental services. TMIIIP has contributed to $2.52 billion in statewide spending since its inception, with a return on investment of $4.69 for every dollar spent.

However, should funding be reduced or eliminated, Fort Worth and suburbs like Benbrook risk losing their foothold in the industry. Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and Landman, has stated that without incentives, productions would likely move to states offering better financial benefits, such as New Mexicoโ€™s 30% rebate program. This shift would mean fewer opportunities for local businesses, a decline in tourism driven by fans visiting filming sites, and missed job creation tied to production work.

For Fort Worth, and Benbrook in particular, the loss of projects like Landman would extend beyond immediate economic impacts. Reduced filming activity could stifle long-term investments in infrastructure and discourage partnerships between local universities and the film industry. Fort Worth might miss out on establishing itself as a key player in Texasโ€™ growing media production sector without consistent support.

As lawmakers consider the next budget cycle, Fort Worth faces a pivotal moment. Robust funding for TMIIIP could secure its place in the film industry and drive sustained economic growth. A funding shortfall, however, could see the community sidelined in favor of more competitive states.
