Voters in Benbrook, Fort Worth, and north Tarrant County are stepping into one of the longest election stretches in recent memory.
On November 4, ballots will feature just one partisan race, but it is a big one: filling the Texas Senate District 9 seat. Two Southlake Republicans, John Huffman and Leigh Wambsganss, are running alongside Democrat Taylor Rehmet of Fort Worth.
If no candidate secures more than half the vote, the top two finishers will face off again in a December 13 runoff. That means voters could be asked to cast ballots twice in just over a month, with another round looming in March for the regular party primaries. The eventual winner will represent a district that spans from Benbrook through north and west Fort Worth, into Arlington and Southlake, encompassing major employers, universities, and schools.
The vacancy was created when Kelly Hancock of Westlake left the Senate to become the acting Texas comptroller. With only one local Senate seat covering this wide region, the outcome will directly impact families, businesses, and institutions across Tarrant County.
Turnout in odd-year elections is historically low, but with so much at stake, local leaders are urging residents not to sit this one out.
