A major crash involving seven vehicles shut down northbound Highway 377 in Benbrook Friday evening, triggering widespread traffic delays and a lengthy cleanup that lasted late into the night.
The crash occurred around 5:30 pm near RM 2871 (also known as Chapin School Road), just before the entrance to Benbrook Stables. Police closed the entire northbound stretch from the school to the park, diverting traffic around the area. At its worst, backups extended to I-20 along RM 2871 and down Highway 377 back through town.
Residents living near the scene said the impact was so loud it sounded like an explosion. Passersby described severe damage to several vehicles and a large debris field scattered from the baseball fields through the intersection at RM 2871. Drivers also noted sand or traction material on the roadway, making lane markings harder to see in some areas.
According to an eyewitness who saw the crash unfold, a silver four-door pickup was allegedly being driven by an unidentified intoxicated driver and was traveling at an estimated 50 to 60 miles per hour in the center turning lane moments before the collision. The witness said the driverโs passenger and two other people involved in the crash appeared to be seriously injured. Authorities have not confirmed those details or released information on the extent of injuries.
The same eyewitness said the scene was treated as if a fatality could occur, requiring a full reconstruction and investigation. That process, involving both local and county law enforcement agencies, is why the roadway remained closed for several hours while evidence was documented and cleared.
Unconfirmed accounts from witnesses also noted coolers and cases of beer among the debris. Law enforcement has not verified alcohol involvement or identified a cause, and no official determination has been released.
As of about 9:30 pm Friday, Benbrook Police Department remained on scene with multiple units and emergency lights active. TxDOT traffic cameras showed northbound 377 still fully blocked as of 9:39 pm.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews continue working.
This is an evolving situation and ongoing investigation, and updates will be shared as more confirmed information becomes available.
