The greater DFW Metroplex, including Benbrook, is now under a Winter Storm Warning, with hazardous conditions expected to stretch from 6 PM Friday through noon Sunday.
Forecasts call for heavy mixed precipitation that could bring significant impacts across North Texas. Ice accumulations between one quarter and one half inch are expected, with isolated areas possibly reaching three quarters of an inch. Sleet and snow totals of one to three inches are also possible, with higher amounts closer to the Red River.
The combination of ice, snow, and strong winds raises serious concerns. Ice buildup on power lines and tree limbs could lead to sporadic or even widespread power outages, some of which may last for an extended period. Falling limbs and downed lines are likely, and travel conditions could quickly become dangerous or even impossible.
Now is the time to prepare. Residents are encouraged to cover outdoor faucets, shut off sprinkler systems, and stock up on groceries and essential supplies for the next few days. Emergency kits should be ready in case of power outages, and checking on vulnerable neighbors, friends, and family could make a real difference.
Travel should be delayed if at all possible. If travel cannot be avoided, extreme caution is advised. A winter storm kit should be in the vehicle, including tire chains, jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothing, water, and a basic first-aid kit.
This storm has the potential to disrupt daily life across the region. Taking a few steps now can help family, friends, and neighbors stay safer and more prepared as conditions deteriorate.
