The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a phone scam making its way through the county.
Scammers are posing as deputies, claiming people have missed jury duty, owe fines, or are under investigation. The fraudsters then demand payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, often spoofing real TCSO phone numbers and using names of actual personnel to seem legitimate.
Authorities stress that TCSO will never call to demand payment, nor do they accept gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency as valid forms of payment.
If you receive one of these calls:
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not send money by phone.
- Write down the number, name used, and save any voicemail.
- Report the call to your local law enforcement agency.
- File a report with the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Residents are urged to stay alert and share this information with friends and family to help prevent more victims.
