Fort Worth—The Tarrant County Jail finds itself under fire once again following two recent in-custody deaths.
With nine inmate deaths in 2024 and over 65 since 2017, critics are pointing fingers at Sheriff Bill Waybourn, known for his tough-on-crime stance. Among the controversies is a $1.2 million lawsuit from 2020, when a baby died after being born in custody due to alleged staff negligence.
Sheriff Waybourn has remained tight-lipped, despite mounting legal settlements and public outcry. He has, however, promised reforms, including body cameras for jailers to improve accountability.
Activists are planning a rally at the January 14, 2025, Tarrant County Commissioners Court meeting to demand policy reviews. Democratic Party Chair Crystal Gayden has called for Waybourn’s resignation, citing systemic negligence.
