In what is now the 3rd reported drowning of this year, recovery efforts resumed Monday morning at Benbrook Lake after a 62-year-old man disappeared beneath the water Sunday evening in the designated swimming area near Mustang Park on the lake’s west side.
A large, multi-agency response searched for hours Sunday using dive teams, boats, and a helicopter before suspending operations overnight because of darkness.
Witnesses say he went beyond the orange buoys while trying to help a little girl retrieve a ball, called for help several times, and never resurfaced.
Officials said Dive 32 has a high degree of confidence in the victim’s location, but recovery efforts have been delayed by weather conditions.
As news of the incident spread, many community members shared personal experiences of the challenging conditions on the lake, including wind, waves, changing underwater terrain, and the importance of wearing life jackets.
