Friday night brought more than a rivalry to Cougar Stadium. It was a celebration of Women in Sports, recognizing the impact of female athletes past, present, and future.
Then the whistle blew, and the Battle of the Brook was on.
The Benbrook Lady Bobcats arrived unbeaten in district and riding a nine-game winning streak. The Lady Cougars entered on a six-game run of its own, hoping to flip the script after an earlier 11-to-0 loss to Benbrook.
The Lady Bobcats set the tone early. Three goals in the first 11 minutes quieted the home crowd, and three more before halftime pushed the lead to 6-0.

The Lady Bobcats added another in the second half before the Lady Cougars broke through on a long shot that found the net and spoiled the shutout bid. Benbrook answered again, closing out a 9-1 victory with two late goals.
Sydney Chavez led the charge with three goals. Lily Chavez and Jessica Anzaldua each scored twice. Grace Klaerner and Lexie Garcia added goals, while Klaerner and Randee Slater recorded assists. The Chavez sisters each contributed two assists to cap a balanced offensive night.
The win moves the Lady Bobcats to 15-3-1 overall and 10-0 in district, holding first place. The Lady Cougars sit at 7-14 overall and 7-2 in district, currently second.
Benbrook returns home Tuesday to host Eastern Hills and will face Young Womenโs Leadership Academy later in the week. Western Hills travels to Carter Riverside before returning home to take on Dunbar.
On a night dedicated to celebrating women in sports, the Lady Bobcats showed exactly why the spotlight was well deserved.
