The Lady Bobcats headed into the Springtown and Mineral Wells Tournament riding a two-game win streak and plenty of confidence. By the end of day one, they also carried a hard lesson in how quickly momentum can shift.
In their opener against the Mineral Wells Lady Rams, Madison Canada took the circle.
The Lady Bobcats started clean and steady, trimming an early deficit to 4-3 by the end of the first inning. But a 16-run third inning by the Lady Rams broke the game open. Mineral Wells capitalized on timely hitting and Benbrook miscues, pulling away for a 20-3 run-rule victory.
Even in a lopsided score, though, there were bright spots. McKinzie Brookshier and Maddy Davila each drove in a run. Brookshier, Natalya Muzquiz, Kaylee Boswell, and Maelee Lindley recorded hits as the Lady Bobcats continued to compete at the plate.
Game two against the Breckenridge Lady Bucks, though, told a different story early on.
Muzquiz took the circle this time, and Benbrook responded with energy. Singles from Boswell and Jolie Hornbeck helped push the Lady Bobcats to a 3-2 lead in the first. Canada later tied the game at four in the second, and a strong third inning rally gave Benbrook an 8-5 advantage.
But once again, one inning changed everything. The Lady Bucks answered with a 10-run fourth, regaining control and eventually closing out the game 8-16by run rule. Muzquiz battled through four and one-third innings, and Boswell, Lindley, and Hornbeck led the offense with key hits.
The Lady Bobcats now sit at 5-9 overall, 1-0 in district play, and are second in the district standings. Tournament play has exposed inconsistency but also revealed a deep-hearted resilience by the Lady Bobcats. This is a team that has fought back before and will continue to fight ’til the end.
They return to the field tomorrow to face Springtown Lady Porcupines at noon and Arlington Heights Lady Yellowjackets at 2 PM. For a group that has already proven it can bounce back, a new day brings another opportunity to reset and respond.
