Homeowners in Benbrook are scratching their heads after receiving unexpected water usage alerts from the Benbrook Water Authority.
One couple, who left their faucets dripping during the recent cold snap to prevent freezing pipes, was surprised by a Friday morning email stating their home had been consuming water at a steady rate of 7 gallons per hour since Tuesday. Now, they’re turning to fellow residents to see if this level of usage is normal—or a sign of a bigger issue.
While some locals suggest that dripping faucets alone wouldn’t trigger such a high reading, others point to possible culprits like leaky toilets, broken sprinkler heads, or undetected pipe leaks.
One resident shared that they only saw similar alerts while refilling their pool, while another, with experience in irrigation, confirmed that 7 gallons per hour could be reasonable under certain conditions.
For those troubleshooting potential leaks, here’s what neighbors recommend:
✅ Check toilets for slow leaks or continuous flushing.
✅ Inspect sprinklers for damage, especially if the ground seems unusually wet.
✅ Look for wet spots inside the house or extra-squishy areas in the yard.
✅ Test your water meter: Shut off the water near your home, then check if the meter is still moving. If it is, the leak may be underground between your house and the city’s main line.
If the issue lies past the meter, the homeowner is responsible for repairs. If it’s before the meter, the Benbrook Water Authority may need to step in.
Either way, residents are encouraged to act fast to avoid unnecessary costs—or wasted water.
